Bulldog Sports Journal is excited to be back for another season of covering Garfield athletics! The mission of BSJ is to provide equitable coverage of Garfield sports to the Garfield community, especially students. We stream football and basketball games on our YouTube channel, and cover many more sports, including posting scores and updates, on our Instagram and Facebook accounts. We can be found online @BulldogSportsJournal on all platforms and on our website, bulldogsportsjournal.org. Now, on to our fall sports updates!
Football:
This is the first year under new head coach Rob Jones, who hopes to turn the program around after going 1-7 last season. Unfortunately, Garfield had to forfeit their games against Eastside Catholic and Rainier Beach due to too many injuries to field a complete roster. They are currently 0-6 after their loss to O’Dea on October 10th. They play Bishop Blanchet tonight.
Boys Golf:
Golf has struggled this season, losing all but one of their matches as of October 14th. The final rounds of the year will be played on Monday, October 20th at the Metro Championship!
Girls Golf:
After losing Olivia Kang and Naylan Orbeck to graduation, girls golf is in a rebuilding year. Captain Ash Jones, senior, is excited for the future, saying, “Our scores are getting better with every game.” Catch the season finale, the Metro League championship round, on Wednesday, October 20th at Jackson Park Golf Course.
Boys Cross Country:
The Boys Cross Country team has lost quite a few team members from last season to graduation, but are looking forward to playing in the Metro League championships on October 23rd!
Girls Cross Country:
The girls XC program is in a great spot! Not only were they competitive this season, but senior Mia Hawkins explains that “the positive environment makes for high enrollment and the continuation of the sport. We have lots of resources and everyone is welcome!” The Metro League championships begin on October 23rd.
Volleyball:
The Volleydawgs have had a hot start to the season, currently sitting atop the Metro Sound division and 2nd in the full conference standings. Led by Cameron Hoffman (12) and Tajah Ngono (10), the 6-2 squad hopes to return to the playoffs and make a deep run. Senior night is Monday, October 20th, at 7pm vs. Rainier Beach!
Girls Soccer:
Girls soccer is off to a 1-4-1 start this season, in what left-back Gemma Albright calls a “rebuilding” year. “There were a lot of seniors who graduated last year,” said Albright, a junior, “but (this year) we’re led by awesome captains Emi Skerritt and Lena Most.” Senior night is Tuesday, October 21st at 4pm at Garfield.
Swim:
Swim has had a successful season so far, with seven girls qualifying for the Metro postseason, and junior Mulan Kukreja also posting a fast enough time to qualify for the district tournament. The last home meet is at 4pm on October 17th at Medgar Evers.
