A new kind of companion is on the rise, and it isn’t warm-blooded. Moments of intimacy and companionship reserved for close friends or relatives have been exchanged for nights of blue light and computer generated responses. With human relationships quietly on the decline, intimate bonds and connections are instead found with chatbots on platforms such as ChatGPT or Character AI, and it has now become an increasingly common way to satisfy the human need for closeness and affinity.
“We’re in the midst of a loneliness epidemic,” Dr. Nicole McNichols, a professor of Psychology at the University of Washington, said. “Younger generations are feeling a sense of disconnection in human alliances, which is why there has been a rise in AI relationships.”
McNichols believes that it’s not just accessibility that draws people into the world of chatbot relations. “AI companions are tailored to completely meet your needs,” she explains. “They don’t have any hopes or dreams – it’s all about the user. It’s inevitable that people get attached, especially considering they’re constantly accessible.” These traits seem more appealing when compared to human relationships. “Real people have real flaws, and they can’t always satisfy the ones around them. There’s less risk of rejection with AI than there is with human connections. No arguments or fights; it seems easier, safer.”
However, constant exposure to made-to-please responses can be dangerous. “A large segment of people can become sort of delusional,” McNichols said. “They get consumed by the programs saying, ‘of course they should sell their home to start a company, and yes, they’re going to make a billion dollars.’” According to leading research, AI chatbots are designed to agree with users, regardless of ethics. Roland Cunningham, a certified therapist, explained that, “AI cannot understand the emotions people carry or how they can respond to the things they say.” McNichols agreed, adding that “[AI] can be almost seductive, how it allows you to believe everything it says. It opens the door to a unique kind of parasocial relationship.” These kinds of relationships are harmful because people are forming bonds with programs that are imitating humans, but they can’t replace people. “Users start creating emotional bonds to a machine that can’t experience the world with you the way a real human can,” she said.

Although it seems that AI is capable of fully replacing human relationships, professionals disagree. “Nobody can get their needs fully met through chatbots,” McNichols said. “Humans require a warm body who can live experiences. In contrast, AI companionship solely exists on a screen, which loses the affection that is required for human relationships to thrive.” Cunningham added that “reading and analyzing body language and tone is essential for human relationships. There’s limited ways AI can accomplish that successfully.”
With all the potential dangers surrounding these human-AI relationships, some have shifted their attention to companies for change. When asked if companies should prioritize limiting attachment with AI on their platforms, McNichols said, “yes, but how that would happen would be very…difficult. The real truth right now is that we need more data before we can ethically intervene. But it’s more about extent rather than fully interrupting these conversations.”
At the heart of this phenomenon, one question still lingers – is it possible for humans to form healthy relationships with AI? “We’re actively collecting data on this,” McNichols said. “The primary evidence is mixed. On one hand, withdrawal from human relationships is damaging, but then again, it can fill an emotional need in specific situations. It starts to turn into a conversation about balance.” Cunningham added, “Professionals are in short supply and high demand. You can’t beat the experience we have, but I understand why some people feel the need to use AI.” While a future of effective AI relationships is uncertain, it isn’t impossible.
As AI evolves, it’s clear that the human desire for closeness and affection remains unscathed. While talking to chatbots can temporarily satisfy these needs, they cannot replace humans entirely. Instead, professionals recommend approaching AI with a sense of caution, awareness, and balance, as its limits are still unknown. Ultimately, no chatbot can replace the emotional depth and warmth of a real human connection.
